Over time limescale build-up gives the instrument a frosted appearance, like a rare crystal or stalactite. Both tops and bottoms of the carboys are used. Fortunately there are still some companies offering fresh sample and instrument libraries you are not likely to find anywhere else. They are sampled with two different sets of mallets and a cello bow. This library is actually made from just one instrument of the gamelan ensemble, the ugal. The metal Ugal keys were bowed using a standard cello bow, vertically across the thin edge of the metal. He worked with London glassblower Charles James to build one, and it had its world premiere in early 1762, played by Marianne Davies.

It consists of about 4 octaves of chromatically tuned glass rods, which are rubbed with wet fingers. The bowls were originally used for cloud chambers used in tracing paths of subatomic particles. Although quite pleasing and fat, this was not strictly realistic. This gives the sound an incredibly detailed, surgical scraping quality. This instrument has 14 keys which cover a range of almost 3 octaves. Just locating these instruments was a challenge in itself - the third in the collection, Cloud Chamber Bowls, proved so elusive that after a lot of research and enquiries, we realised that if we wanted to sample some, we would have to build a set ourselves.

Le Cristal Baschet: A bizarre 'sound sculpture' designed in 1952 by Bernard and Francois Baschet. The Cristal Baschet or 'Le Cristal' was designed in 1952 by Bernard and François Baschet. The instruments feature the sounds of all 14 bowls played with soft mallets and 13 bowls hit with hard mallets unfortunately one bowl broke. The whole spindle turned by means of a foot pedal. The samples are mapped across 11 Kontakt instruments. We travelled to Paris to record with Thomas Bloch, a virtuoso musician who specialises in rare instruments, and Glass Works is the result. With samples chromatically mapped over four octaves, it sounds great playing complex chords as it does in real life , but its lovely ethereal tone is equally effective when delivering a single melody line.

Cloud Chamber Bowls — an instrument built in the 1960s by Harry Partch This instrument consists of 14 bowls — sections tops and bottoms of 12-gallon glass carboys — hanging in a wooden frame. Cloud Chamber Bowls: The Cloud Chamber Bowls are Soniccouture's recreation of an instrument built in the 1950s by maverick American composer Harry Partch. Each patch features 12 different sounds, that are each assigned a colour. Crossfading is controllable via the mod wheel. The modern version uses a silent electric motor.

Each sampled sustain is held for 8 seconds or longer with three dynamics recorded for each sustain. The first two instruments - Le Cristal and the Glass Armonica, as strange and beautiful as each other - required us to make a trip to Paris, to the studio of Thomas Bloch. The views expressed are those of the contributors and not necessarily those of the publishers. This is pitched in the middle of the gamelan range, and so is quite versatile and generally leads the gangsa section of a traditional Balinese group. The Cristal Baschet is probably my favorite instrument, although I am also really liking the sounds of the Glass Armonica Doubled Synth. He worked with London glassblower Charles James to build one, and it had its world premiere in early 1762, played by Marianne Davies. These pictures show the glass rods connected to the metal tines.

Since we were unable to locate a set of Chamber bowls whose owner was willing to let us record them, and since most sets are 'home made' anyway, in the spirit of Partch we decided that we would make our own set.
