Finally, Elena comes to a new understanding of the path her life has taken, and Damon makes an emotional confession to Stefan. They quickly figure out that if Seline is still in town, the bell must be close by. There was a shift last week thanks to Elena Nina Dobrev rejecting Damon's Ian Somerhalder declaration of love; this sent Damon into the arms of Rebekah Claire Holt and now on a path to return to his former self as the 'bad' brother. Damon tells Elena he knows what to do but when it all goes down he wants her to have nothing to do with it and to be safe. She tells Michael he destroyed their family and it was not Klaus.
Well, this season is about someone who has to spend at least an hour getting dressed in robes and a skeleton mask and who attaches giant twigs to his back in order to terrorize high school students and nuns, so hold your judgement. Mouse over thumbnail for slideshow. If he did take blood, why did no one consider that he might come armed with hybrid back up? Stefan can work for Cade better alone, so he stabs Damon with a wooden hanger. Damon is furious because he had Klaus — the stake right in him and it could all be over. Stefan tells Tyler that it is a great party and Tyler tells Stefan it is not a party it is a wake it is what Klaus wants.
By the climax I was convinced they had split the stake in two and as Damon stabbed Klaus, someone would stab Michael. Tyler tells Caroline that he set Rebekah up with Matt and she is not impressed. He goes to stake Tyler and Bonnie stops him by putting a migraine spell on both of them. They allegedly make babies float over fires, and we don't actually know the full extent of the Farm's influence, so it's not out of the question that it might be able to get all that blood back in Archie's beautiful body where it belongs. The least exciting option would be if Edgar Never Ever and his culty farm has some way to revive people from the dead. She tells Klaus she misses him that she is miserable without him. A somewhat self-centered Elena suggests Damon was angry and lashed out by sleeping with Rebekah, but he suggests that maybe not everything is about her.
Tyler tells Damon whatever move he makes Klaus will stop him. They even convince Rebekah to get in on the plan, since she is still angry with Klaus. He asks Tyler if he knows who the people are at the people. The endgame was of course to get rid of Klaus Joseph Morgan and they acknowledged that their plans in the past have a habit of falling apart because someone's humanity gets in the way. Bonnie tells Elena that she cannot talk to her about Jeremy. This way, when Mikael followed through on his threat to kill Elena, thereby ending Klaus' ability to make Hybrids, Klaus would give in, fight Mikael and be killed.
He calls Klaus up to tell him Mikael is dead, or at least daggered. She is upset because he did not tell he what was going on. Elena is trying to find a dress in her closet for Homecoming. Too bad Seline is trying to put the bell together and use it against her sister. Over at the high school there are sirens and Caroline asks what happened and Tyler tells her that there was a flood so they are moving the party. Enzo and Bonnie are also dealing with issues of life and death.
So the couple agrees that forever will have to be about 70 years. Surely it would have taken a decent amount of her blood to make all those hybrids? Elena is clearly jealous of the Original sex that Damon had but does she have any right to be annoyed with him? The Showdown Mikael and Damon make their appearance at the party. But to do it in front of your brothers… yikes! Since a vampire can't stake an Original without dying, Elena would have to do the honors. The night takes a surreal turn when Klaus puts his latest plan into action. Or maybe he was never attacked by a bear at all. Stefan replies fine — but then you will never see your family again! So, basically, it was no different than any other day. Operation Lure Klaus Back commenced with Stefan making the call to inform Klaus, who was busy making hybrids in the Portland woods, that Mikael had been daggered.
Elena does not understand why Stefan did what he did. Sure, the that a Riverdale and crossover isn't happening yet, but doesn't it feel just a little convenient that a witch with a penchant for necromancy is just over the border? Why do we think Vikings are British?! Elena then goes over and pulls the stake out of Michael. As the hybrids gather outside Klaus tells Michael that they could tear him limb from limb. Not sure if Damon Ian Somerhalder helped with his Katherine comparison. Whatever plan they've put into place, you can be sure Klaus won't stumble easily into any trap they set. Once Klaus sees him, he will remove the dagger and then stab Klaus with a special stake made from the old oak tree. Michael has a dagger with which they can kill him and then they will lure Klaus back.
Elena and Matt resort to breaking and entering in their search for evidence to prove Dr. A body which is, oddly enough, there I'm sure all will be explained momentarily. Tyler tells her that she needs to understand but Caroline is not happy that he has to accept that he is one of the bad ones. After a dance and a reminder of how painful it will be for Damon to get his full humanity back, it seems to work. So why is the still getting between them? They drove it through his heart.
Just because Rebekah is mad at Klaus now it does not mean she will stay mad at him. Mikael stabs Elena and she falls to the ground. And why are Mikael, Rebekah and Klaus propagating the stereotype? Katherine tells him he needs to do it and to get mad. Needless to say, Sybil is not happy with this development. Caroline asks Matt what is going on — he is suppose to be with Rebekah.
And that whole Klaus vs. Matt gets around the police officers mind controlled to protected the bell. Elena thanks Rebekah for helping them. The rapid twists and turns coupled with nonlinear storytelling left us without much emotional resonance in scenes that should have been heartbreaking. Klaus ultimately asked to speak to Rebekah, and she confirmed Mikael's run-in with a dagger as well. Klaus grabbed the dagger and killed Mikael! So as much as Kath wanted Klaus dead she did not want to sacrifice the brothers to achieve it.
